Prof. Dr. Jhunu Shamsun Nahar is a distinguished psychiatrist and psychotherapist with over three decades of experience in the field of mental health, both in clinical practice and academic leadership. She currently holds the position of Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Dhaka, and previously served as the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Jhunu completed her MBBS with distinction from Sofia Medical Academy, Bulgaria, in 1983 and earned her FCPS in Psychiatry from the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1991. She has received specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness, anger management, stress management, and psychological first aid through programs conducted in Pakistan, Italy, the USA, Denmark, and Bangladesh. Prof. Jhunu is a respected academician, serving as a thesis supervisor and examiner for MD, M.Phil., and FCPS candidates, with 63 research publications in national and international journals. She has organized and conducted numerous psychotherapy trainings, including focused sessions on couple therapy, group therapy, and relaxation techniques. She is the President of the Association of Therapeutic Counselors Bangladesh (ATCB), and an active member of BACAMH and BAP. She is also recognized internationally as an International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (IFAP). Through her lifelong dedication to teaching, research, and psychotherapy, Prof. Dr. Jhunu Shamsun Nahar continues to shape the mental health landscape of Bangladesh with compassion, clinical excellence, and academic rigor.
